The coaching industry can vary greatly from person to person in how much skill one has as well as experience, a lot of people want to become a mentor but do not have the required skill set. Avoid being the casualty of faulty marketing.

I have been a part of this online coaching space for about 3 years now and I am just starting to get comfortable with my place in it because I value authenticity and real skill and knowledge.

For many years, I stood in the background in a way BECAUSE I did not like the way I saw people marketing their services – and many times just coming out the gate as a new coach.

If I can make 30k in 3 months through marketing, you can do it too!

Do you know I wanted to scream every time I saw that?

I could NEVER do that. And, if I had to do that to get clients… I would just rather not. That was how I thought. Can you relate?

So, I wanted to share with you my mindset and thought process in how I have picked my coaches. All coaches are not created equal and this is where I start when looking at WHOM I choose to hire as my coach:

I check what kind of lifestyle and business have they created to avoid being the casualty of faulty marketing.

You want to find someone that is doing what it is that you desire to do and will be a good role model to emulate. Further, they need to be coaching on WHAT it is that you need support with at that time (but more on that later).

My coach is a multi-7 figure business owner who is generous, has a loving husband, a 2-year-old son, and travels several times out of the year. {Yes! I want that!}

To avoid being the casualty of faulty marketing check their back story & credentials.

What is their background and credentials for doing what they are doing? It is OK if they have not been coaching forever, but what they have done prior to coaching or consulting should be congruent with what they are coaching around.

I coach on money and mindset. These are both things that I have been learning, studying, and working with for over 12 years – even though I am about 2.5 years into my coaching business.

What kind of results have they gotten – for themselves, clients, and others to avoid being the casualty of faulty marketing?

FOLLOW their story! Listen. Pay attention. Is it congruent? Does it align? What are their clients saying about them? What have others that know them to say about them?

When looking for your coach; Ask yourself: Are they getting the results YOU want to have?

[Side note: If you are a new coach, don’t worry about this too much. This is about showing your value through the lens of others and through results. So, even if you don’t have a paid client yet, you can use your story, people who knew you elsewhere that can speak to who you are and do some free coaching and get some testimonials.]

Does what they’re talking about MAKE SENSE? – What I need to be working on now

This is key to getting your success. You need to know what your NEXT STEP is and find a coach that can help you with that! I believe in having a specialist – someone that teaches a specific topic or concept vs a generalist.

Last year, I decided that I needed to focus on building my audience and mastering the sales conversation. And, while I was at a live event, I was introduced to my current coach. She is a multi-7 figure business owner, with a simple business model speaking DIRECTLY into what I wanted to learn: How to build my list and how to sell to it.

Do they CARE about my well-being?

When someone BELIEVES in you and can HEAR you it can make all the difference! It was a powerful moment when I realized that my coach really HEARD me and GOT me. I could see that she CARED about my well-being and success – and NOT just about a sale.

You can see this in how they respond to your questions and concerns – when their response takes into consideration what you just shared. Maybe even using your EXACT words! You will feel their energy, their tone. Look at how they SHOW UP for you in front of the camera AND behind the scenes.
