I recently experienced how fear can grab hold of us so tightly that we are paralyzed or even convinced that our ego is right in what it is telling us. Our Ego tries to separate us from our inner guide or our truth. For example, our EGO may say: “You are not good enough; you will never be able to change, it is too hard, stay in this safe space; it’s a dog eat dog world out there; you don’t have to make a decision right now, do it later when we are ready, you probably won’t get it right anyway.”
In the past I had a case of what I call the Ego Blues. At this time I was so disconnected from myself and my inner guide that I looked to the outside world to validate me as someone who was good, valued and lovable. I remember waking up dreading the day or telling myself…”I will be happy when… I have that house, that business, enough money, when I can speak eloquently and articulately, when I have my best friend and husband (one person), when I get to travel the world, when I am free of the confines of society.” I constantly lived in the future and was never present to the NOW. This led to a lot of sadness and frustration, fear and anxiety.
However, being present to the NOW is truly incredible. NOW is the only time we have. If you think about it, when you are truly present in the current moment, fear or anxiety cannot exist. Fear exists only outside of NOW. We can fear that we will not get that job (future), we can fear that he will leave us (future), we can fear that we will get fired (future). Our Ego also uses past experiences to keep us stuck and afraid. The equation often looks like this: Based on this past experience + it will happen to you again (future) = fear & anxiety.
When you choose to be present nothing else exists but this moment. Love it, live it, enjoy it…it is a gift. The past is gone, the future does not exist, all we have is NOW.
How many of you live in the future or the past? How many of you fear, worry or dread? How many of you cannot seem to rid yourself of anxiety and pressure? How many of you have fear of loss or abandonment, fear of love or failure, fear of success or a fear of change?
1. Take a minute: I heard this week that there are over 86,000 moments in a day! You can make a new choice in any of those moments. That is exciting! So, stop right now and be conscious of what is happening in this very moment. Is there an airplane flying over head, are there cars racing by, is the wind blowing and the trees rustling? What do you notice happening in your body? Bring your attention to this moment.
2. Choose: Practice choosing this action every moment.
3. Meditate/Stillness: Practice 5-10+ minutes of stillness and mediation daily.
